JAB Recruitment is actively seeking a Service Technician to support one of our prestigious in global engineering and technology primarily serving the offshore oil and gas industry, with operations in defense, aerospace and renewables at their Chicago, IL location. This role involves providing technical support during both the installation and ongoing maintenance and repair of AGV systems, with a focus on minimizing system downtime through effective troubleshooting and problem-solving.
This position requires a combination of electromechanical skills and proficiency in software, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and system diagnostics. The Service Technician will handle both hardware and software aspects of the system to ensure efficient operation. Responsibilities include managing service tickets, diagnosing and resolving technical issues, and reporting progress. The role may involve working independently, while also coordinating with supervisors and cross-functional teams, with opportunities to contribute to process improvements.
The Service Technician role requires extensive travel (60%-75%) to various customer locations across North America and possibly internationally. This dynamic work environment provides exposure to a variety of technical challenges and client projects. The position offers an opportunity to make a significant impact on customers’ operations by ensuring the reliable performance of products in the field. This role is suited to individuals who are comfortable working independently in a customer-facing environment, applying both mechanical and software expertise to solve technical problems.

Work Schedule: Day shift. Mon – Fri, 8am – 5pm; Travel required, about 40%; Will be onsite 100%

Responsibilities
Perform installation, repair, and maintenance of Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) systems as directed by Service Supervisors and/ or Project Managers.
Travel to customer sites regularly, sometimes on short notice, to address technical issues and system deficiencies.
Execute electromechanical installation, hardware assembly, repairs, and troubleshooting for AGV components, including wiring and calibration.
Configure and update software for AGV system parts, ensuring correct functionality.
Maintain detailed records of maintenance and repairs using the Mobile Robotics (OMR) ticketing system.
Conduct technical activities such as fault diagnostics, software testing, hardware calibration, and system performance analysis.
Review and interpret technical documentation and schematics to solve system issues and provide updates as necessary.
Observe and assess system performance, identifying and resolving operational challenges.
Collect, analyze, and report on system performance data to assist in troubleshooting and improving AGV functionality.
Provide feedback and suggestions for system improvements based on service activities, collaborating with the wider technical team to develop maintenance plans.
Offer guidance to customers’ technical teams on maintaining and operating AGV systems as directed.
Professionally represent OMR during customer interactions and site work.
Actively participate in safety and quality programs.
Continuously seek and suggest improvements to service processes, including cross-departmental optimization
Participate in special projects and continuous improvement initiatives as assigned
Other duties as directed by management teams
Minimum Requirements
Experience in Mechanical, Electrical, or Computer Science disciplines.
2-3 years of experience in service or maintenance engineering, particularly with electromechanical systems.
2-3 years of experience within a service environment, handling customer interactions and troubleshooting.
Willingness to travel 60%-75% to customer locations within North America.
Valid driver’s license.
Proficient in English, both written and verbal.
Strong customer service orientation and ability to work independently under tight schedules.
Ability to analyze complex technical issues and provide effective solutions.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other software tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on experience with wiring and use of hand tools.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in any of the required disciplines.
2 years of experience developing or executing test plans for technical systems.
Experience with the integration of software and hardware in an automation environment including component installation and wiring termination.
Experience with software tools for diagnosing and configuring PLCs, controllers, sensors, and embedded devices.
Experience with soldering (certification beneficial).
Knowledge of Windows OS, Active Directory, and hardware support. Familiarity with Linux-based systems beneficial.
Ability to acquire a passport for travel, if needed.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Curious, problem-solving mindset with the ability to think critically and anticipate issues.
Strong administrative skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Working Conditions This position is considered FIELD WORK which is characterized as follows.
Almost exclusively indoors during the day and occasionally at night.
Locations and conditions vary by customer.
Occasional exposure to airborne dust in the workplace.
Requires use of project specific PPE.
Frequently working near moving equipment.
Work surface is stable (flat).
Job tasks are performed in close proximity to other people.
