Senior Well Abandonment Engineer – MODU Ops
Location: Aberdeen (Onshore)
Contract Length: 24 months
Our Operator Client is seeking an experienced Senior Well Abandonment Engineer – MODU Operations to support onshore planning and offshore execution of subsea well operations, with a strong focus on abandonment activities. This role provides critical technical and planning support to MODU Superintendents and rig teams, ensuring operations are delivered safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
Well & Abandonment Planning
Design well activities and develop detailed well programmes in line with company management systems, legislation, and good oilfield practice
Analyse offset data, generate and evaluate design options, assess risk, and prepare detailed programme documentation
Prepare regulatory examination and notification/consent submissions
Develop time and cost estimates and coordinate procurement of services, equipment, and materials
Prepare well design philosophies to ensure life-of-well objectives are met
Maintain awareness of technology developments and incorporate improvements where appropriate
Operations Support
Provide technical and planning support to MODU Superintendents and rig teams
Coordinate onshore internal and external stakeholders to plan contingencies, resolve operational issues, and support safe execution
Support preparation and review of work instructions, risk assessments, programme reviews, management of change, and operational deviations
Assist with planning and coordination of personnel and equipment in line with the well schedule
Undertake regular offshore visits to oversee vendor activities and strengthen onshore–offshore collaboration
Commercial & Cost Control
Provide technical input to procurement and tender evaluation processes
Support technical aspects of contract drafting and vendor management
Proactively manage vendor performance during operations to ensure technical and commercial compliance
Monitor daily cost expenditure, support cost tracking, and approve invoices within delegated authority
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
Prepare end-of-well reports and as-installed documentation for internal and regulatory requirements
Lead wash-up meetings and close out non-conformances
Capture lessons learned by analysing performance against plan to drive continuous improvement
QHSE
Comply with and support adherence to the Company Management System
Recommend improvements and ensure effective controls are maintained for drilling engineering and operations
Essential
Degree in an engineering or technical discipline
Offshore survival, UK medical, and MIST certification
Subsea Well Control certification to Supervisor level (e.g. IWCF)
Extensive experience as a Senior Well Engineer supporting MODU subsea drilling, completion, intervention, and abandonment operations
Strong experience preparing and reviewing work instructions, risk assessments, programme reviews, MoCs, and operational deviations
High level of technical expertise across drilling, completions, well services, and abandonment operations
Strong commercial and contractual awareness
Sound knowledge of subsea well abandonment operations and the associated HSE regulatory framework
Desirable
Experience supporting MODU abandonment operations in an operations engineering capacity
Technical knowledge of vertical and horizontal Xmas tree systems, associated tooling, and completion/workover riser systems
Good offshore wellsite engineering experience
Experience working within an operator environment and mature assets
High levels of drive, energy, and personal impact
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
Willingness to undertake regular offshore visits
Availability to participate in out-of-hours duty rotas supporting technical and emergency response
