Senior Operational Accountant – Natural Gas (Contract)

Lakewood, CO | Hybrid (Mon–Wed onsite | Thu–Fri remote)

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Operational Accountant with natural gas industry experience to support operational accounting and financial reporting activities. This role focuses on journal entries, account reconciliations, gross margin analysis, and regulatory reporting under GAAP. The position works closely with accounting leadership and cross-functional teams to ensure accurate financial results and continuous process improvement.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare accurate and timely journal entries as part of the monthly close

• Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate variances

• Support monthly, quarterly, and annual gross margin analysis

• Assist with annual budgeting and monthly forecasting activities

• Prepare federal regulatory filings, including quarterly and annual FERC reporting

• Develop and maintain fuel tracker mechanisms in coordination with regulatory teams

• Support internal and external audits by preparing required documentation and data

• Identify and assist with accounting process improvements

• Maintain and consistently execute internal controls

• Serve as a resource and mentor to junior accounting staff

• Collaborate with stakeholders across finance and operations

• Perform additional accounting and special project work as needed

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field from an accredited institution

Experience & Knowledge

• Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience

• Experience with natural gas processing, transportation, or storage accounting

• Strong working knowledge of GAAP

• Experience with computerized accounting systems and financial analysis

• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint

• Highly detail-oriented and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines

Preferred (Not Required)

• Prior experience with FERC reporting

• Experience using Oracle and/or Quorum (Connect) billing systems

• Familiarity with regulatory recovery mechanisms
