Overview:
We are seeking a hands-on, creative, and technically skilled R&D Technician/Technologist to support the design, assembly, operation, and optimization of prototypes for oil and gas processing equipment. This role requires a strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with electrical, control, and instrumentation systems. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative, safety-focused environment and brings a solid foundation in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering principles.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years troubleshooting complex equipment with multiple energy sources.

  • Preferred Background: Experience in a multi-discipline fabrication or R&D environment, involving mechanical assembly, instrumentation, and control systems.

  • Industry Experience: Oil and gas or industrial fabrication environments preferred, but candidates from related industries will be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

  • Design and assemble pilot systems and prototypes, turning conceptual ideas into functional testing equipment.

  • Assist in developing project schedules, budgets, and progress reports.

  • Support project managers during design, construction, and installation phases.

  • Size, select, and procure materials, components, and equipment.

  • Collaborate with vendors and subcontractors.

  • Interpret process, electrical, and instrumentation diagrams.

  • Develop and document operating procedures for prototype and pilot testing.

  • Occasionally support internal or client field operations.

Operation & Maintenance

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot systems such as pumps, heaters, pressure vessels, instrumentation, and control systems.

  • Ensure safe and reliable operation of prototypes and pilot systems.

  • Plan and execute testing campaigns, analyze data, and optimize prototype performance.

  • Identify and resolve equipment or process issues in collaboration with the Research Engineering team.

  • Maintain detailed technical documentation and test reports.

  • Support the creation and upkeep of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Safety & Risk Management

  • Assess projects for operational and safety risks and implement mitigation strategies.

  • Advise management on potential performance or safety issues.

  • Maintain an organized, safe, and efficient work environment, including inventory control of tools and consumables.

Required & Preferred Skills

  • Proven ability to operate and maintain complex mechanical systems, laboratory, or pilot-scale process equipment.

  • Understanding of oil, water, and gas production processes.

  • Experience with instrumentation and control systems, including PLCs and programming (preferred).

  • Familiarity with process sensors (temperature, pressure, level, flow, pH).

  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, industrial process equipment, valves, and piping.

  • Strong ability to read and interpret process, electrical, and instrumentation diagrams.

  • Demonstrated mechanical assembly and fabrication skills.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Visio, MS Word, and Excel (preferred).

  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
