R&D Technician / Technologist
Overview:
We are seeking a hands-on, creative, and technically skilled R&D Technician/Technologist to support the design, assembly, operation, and optimization of prototypes for oil and gas processing equipment. This role requires a strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with electrical, control, and instrumentation systems. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative, safety-focused environment and brings a solid foundation in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering principles.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years troubleshooting complex equipment with multiple energy sources.
Preferred Background: Experience in a multi-discipline fabrication or R&D environment, involving mechanical assembly, instrumentation, and control systems.
Industry Experience: Oil and gas or industrial fabrication environments preferred, but candidates from related industries will be considered.
Design & Development
Design and assemble pilot systems and prototypes, turning conceptual ideas into functional testing equipment.
Assist in developing project schedules, budgets, and progress reports.
Support project managers during design, construction, and installation phases.
Size, select, and procure materials, components, and equipment.
Collaborate with vendors and subcontractors.
Interpret process, electrical, and instrumentation diagrams.
Develop and document operating procedures for prototype and pilot testing.
Occasionally support internal or client field operations.
Operation & Maintenance
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot systems such as pumps, heaters, pressure vessels, instrumentation, and control systems.
Ensure safe and reliable operation of prototypes and pilot systems.
Plan and execute testing campaigns, analyze data, and optimize prototype performance.
Identify and resolve equipment or process issues in collaboration with the Research Engineering team.
Maintain detailed technical documentation and test reports.
Support the creation and upkeep of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Safety & Risk Management
Assess projects for operational and safety risks and implement mitigation strategies.
Advise management on potential performance or safety issues.
Maintain an organized, safe, and efficient work environment, including inventory control of tools and consumables.
Proven ability to operate and maintain complex mechanical systems, laboratory, or pilot-scale process equipment.
Understanding of oil, water, and gas production processes.
Experience with instrumentation and control systems, including PLCs and programming (preferred).
Familiarity with process sensors (temperature, pressure, level, flow, pH).
Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, industrial process equipment, valves, and piping.
Strong ability to read and interpret process, electrical, and instrumentation diagrams.
Demonstrated mechanical assembly and fabrication skills.
Proficiency with AutoCAD, Visio, MS Word, and Excel (preferred).
