Mate Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:
Operational Duties:

  • Assist the Captain in navigating and positioning the dredge according to project requirements and survey data.
  • Supervise deck crew and ensure all dredging, anchoring, and pipeline operations are conducted safely and efficiently.
  • Oversee and participate in the movement and maintenance of dredge anchors, spuds, and floating pipelines.
  • Monitor dredge systems, pumps, and engines for proper performance; report malfunctions promptly.
  • Maintain daily logs and assist with operational reports, fuel readings, and maintenance records.
  • Assist with barge movements, material disposal, and coordination with tender boats or tugs.
Safety & Compliance:
  • Enforce company and USACE/USCG safety regulations, including compliance with EM 385-1-1 and environmental standards.
  • Conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, and ensure crew adherence to PPE requirements.
  • Respond to onboard emergencies, including spill response, fire prevention, and first aid.
Maintenance & Equipment:
  • Inspect and maintain deck gear, winches, anchors, cables, and navigation lights.
  • Assist in preventative maintenance schedules for marine and dredging equipment.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of the dredge deck and living quarters.
Crew Management:
  • Provide leadership and direction to deckhands and other crew members.
  • Train crew in safe operating procedures and vessel maintenance practices.
  • Promote teamwork, discipline, and professionalism among the dredging crew.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in marine or dredging operations.
  • Knowledge of dredging operations, pipeline layouts, and marine equipment operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret dredge logs, charts, and project drawings.
  • Proficient in basic seamanship, rigging, and line handling.
  • Familiarity with USACE safety and environmental compliance standards.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Work Conditions:
  • Rotational schedule (e.g., 21 days on / 7 days off or project-based).
  • Must be able to work long hours in varying weather conditions aboard floating equipment.
  • Travel to project sites as required.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and climb ladders or confined spaces safely.

Compensation:
  • Competitive hourly or salary rate commensurate with experience.
  • Overtime and per diem available on applicable projects.
